OPEN WATER COURSE
The PADI Open Water Course is the world?s most popular diver certification and is intended for people who
have never dived before and who want to become qualified. The Open Water Course provides you with the
knowledge needed to keep you safe as you experience your first breaths underwater and explore the
underwater world. Once certified you will be able to dive to 18m with a buddy.
The full course takes only 4 evenings and 1 weekend (or occasionally 2 weekends). On the 4 evenings (or first weekend)
you will complete your Knowledge Development and the Pool Dives. The second weekend takes you to a lake or coastal
environment where you will complete four 'open water' dives. If you would rather complete your open water dives overseas,
you can do a 'referral' option which is 4 evenings (or 1 weekend) of the course only.
WEEKEND ONE: POOL DIVES AND THEORY
1. Knowledge Development - This develops your familiarity with basic principles and safety concepts of
diving. You complete the knowledge development in your own time, reading each of five sections of the
PADI Open Water Diver Manual, watching the corresponding section of the PADI Open Water Diver DVD,
and completing the knowledge reviews. You briefly review what you studied in each section with your
instructor and take a short quiz to be sure you?re confident with the information. At the end of the course,
you take a short exam that makes sure you are happy with all the key concepts.
2. Pool Dives - In the pool you will experience your first breaths underwater and learn the skills required to
dive in the open water, and to dive safely.
Location: Our dive centre in Kingston, and either New Malden Leisure Centre (Wednesday evenings), Putney Leisure Centre (Friday evenings) or weekends at private pool in Surbiton.
Schedule: For midweek courses:- Meet at either New Malden (Wednesday) or Putney (Friday) at 6.30pm where you will first go through the theory and then head into the pool. Sessions will end at 10pm.
For weekend course: - Two full weekend days 9am - 6:00pm. We meet at the dive centre, spending the mornings reviewing the Knowledge Reviews. In the afternoon we head to the pool and aim to be finished by 6pm.
WEEKEND TWO: OPEN WATER DIVES
Four open water dives are required for certification with two dives conducted per day. You now get the
chance to put to practice what you learnt in the pool and fully experience the adventure of diving in the open
water!
Location: We use a local lake near Windsor (Wraysbury)
Schedule: Two full days.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW?
Prerequisites:
Swim 200m (any stroke, no time limit) and tread water or float for 10 minutes.
Minimum age 10 and you must be comfortable in the water and in general good health.
You will need roughly 1 - 2 weeks to read the open water diver manual and to complete the knowledge reviews at the end of each chapter before the course starts.
If you wish to complete the course in a drysuit you will need a further half day training in the swimming pool. We recommend using a dry-suit during the months of November to April. The extra training costs only ?60, which is a small price to pay to keep warm and to dive all year round!
If you like learning with a personal computer, you can purchase the Open Water Diver Manual and DVD together as a CD-ROM
